Photography Exhibit by Sonya Smith & Lucy Tomlinson

To tell the Lowry story, Sonya Smith and Lucy Tomlinson look beyond dates and facts to the people who create its spirit. Through portraits and interviews, the pair reveal the experiences of the individuals who embody the organisation’s work and impact over the last 25 years.

From those who advocated for Lowry’s inception to young people embracing the opportunity to realise their ambitions and potential, these eleven voices capture a trajectory which continues on, carrying a community forward to a bright future.

Together, they represent the unique and valuable contributions of the thousands of people that have made Lowry what it is today, allowing us a glimpse of art’s life-changing power.

About the artists

Sonya Smith and Lucy Tomlinson interlace text and image to create a form of synecdochic portraiture that explores how individuals influence groups and vice versa. They look beyond the conventions of the corporate image to find the quiet moments in which people reveal themselves most fully.
