Lowry gets ready to put the ‘Live’ in Live Action in 2025

There’s a bit of a movie theme running through our shows at Lowry. We’re starting 2025 with a whole host of shows based on cinematic theatrics. So, if you’ve ever wished that your movies were just that little bit more realistic, there’s no better place to be than Lowry this year!

We’re Going to Need a Bigger Theatre…

The Boat is small, the weather is awful, the filming is delayed, and the actors don’t get on. So, how did a production so fraught with problems become one of the most iconic summer blockbusters of all time? The Shark is Broken follows actors, Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider and the chaotic story behind Spielberg’s classic film: ‘Jaws’.

And the connections to the 1975 film don’t just stop there! In a stroke of casting genius, The Shark is Broken stars Ian Shaw playing his own father, Robert Shaw!

For movie lovers who love all the behind-the-scenes stories, or for the casual fans who simply loves the film. The Shark is Broken is the must-watch Theatrical Blockbuster of the Season! Breaking down in the Lyric from 4th Feb.

Theatre, Uh, finds a way…

Have you ever wanted to watch the original Jurassic Park? Did you ever think that Spielberg’s film just wasn’t funny enough? Then ‘Hold On To Your Butts’ is the shot-for-shot Jurassic Parody for you!

After a sell-out run in New York and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Hold On To Your Butts’ stomps onto the Quays stage from 12th – 15th Feb. Nothing says Valentine romance than laughing until your stomach hurts and tears stream down your face.

Don’t be too preoccupied with whether or not you could see this show; you absolutely should. Don’t walk, RUN to get your tickets!

Han shot Guido first…

After the storming success of A Christmas Carol: The Musical, featuring the delightful Claire Moore as Scrooge. Hope Mill Theatre comes back to Lowry with their glamourous production of NINE – In Concert.

This Musical centres around Movie Director, Guido Contini as he struggles to balance his attentions between the loves of his life: His films, his wife, his mistress, his muse and his mother.

Guido Contini’s portrayal is in very experienced hands by Ramin Karimloo, whose previous roles include: Jean Valjean in Les Miserables (Toronto, London & NYC, Tony Award Nominee), The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera (London, Italy & Monte Carlo) and Gomez Addams in The Addams Family (London Palladium) among many others.

So many musicals adapted in to so many films, If Guido were a real director, we’re sure he would have had a go at directing all of them! NINE – In Concert opens in the Lyric Theatre on 1st Feb.

Choo- Choo- Choose Lowry for all the best Theatre!

Even if you haven’t read the bestselling book, you’ve definitely heard of it. Starring I’m A Celeb winner, Giovanna Fletcher, Girl on the Train follows the thrilling, twisting story of Rachel Watson.

Rachel spends every day on her commute into work, watching the same couple living their perfect lives, until one day the woman she’s been watching disappears and Rachel finds herself as a witness.

Drama doesn’t get any better than this! The Girl on the Train comes to the Lyric from Tue 11 Feb until Sat 15 Feb.

In this Space, EVERYONE can hear you Scream

That’s right, Lowry even does Horror! Strap in for an unforgettably scary experience with Ghost Stories, written by Jeremy Dyson (The League of Gentleman) and Andy Nyman (co-creator of Derren Brown’s television and stage shows).

Be afraid, be very afraid for the story of Professor Goodman, a man set out to de-bunk the paranormal. He investigates three hauntings - as recounted by a night-watchman, a teenage boy, and a businessman awaiting his first child – but finds that he fast runs out of explanations!

Starting on the West End and adapted into a smash hit 2017 film, you’ll find nothing scarier to watch than Ghost Stories this 2025. Are you brave enough to book a seat? We guarantee you’ll only need the edge of it….

Ghost Stories comes to the Lyric from Tue 25th February.

Louisa’s Little Women in Lowry’s Lyric this Lent

Two film adaptations and a BBC Miniseries, Little Women is a timeless classic written by Louisa May Alcott in the late 1860’s. Greta Gerwig most recently adapted the novel in her 2019 film and now it’s being adapted by Anne-Marie Casey and is coming to the Lyric on 8th Apr.

There’s no better time to revisit the tale of the March sisters – Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy and there’s no better venue than Lowry. Follow their journeys from sisterhood into womanhood and join the celebration of women proving to the world that women can be heroes of their own story.

Hollywood has shown how many multitudes of superheroes it takes to fill a cinema. Lowry will show that it only takes four little women to fill a theatre! By ready for a theatrical experience filled with laughter, tears, and a heart-warming lifting of the spirits.

Gizza Ticket, Go on, Gizzit

An Honourable mention in this blog has to go to National Theatre’s Production of Boys From the Blackstuff. While originally adapted into a TV Series, one can’t not think of Boys From the Blackstuff without thinking of the beloved film actor, Bernard Hill. Hill, who played Yosser Hughes in the TV series and also played Théoden in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy. And he was born and raised right down the road from Lowry in Blakely, Manchester.

Not only that, but in an even bigger twist of fate and coincidence, this production of Boys from the Blackstuff has been adapted by James Graham! Writer of the National Theatre’s Olivier Award-Winning hit, Dear England which will also be coming to Lowry this 2025

So whatever your taste in film is, whatever type of theatre you enjoy. Lowry has got you covered in 2025. Whatever you’re here for, we’re here for it!
