New Year, New blog
New Year new me, as the old saying goes. A time to try something new, discover a new version of yourself, set some intentions and broaden some horizons. The lethargy of the same old same old is blown away with the turning of the calendar, Jan 1st 2025; who do you want to be? What do you want to experience?
Here at Lowry we have a lot of shows (like over 1000 performances a year?!) so its easy to miss something new. We have hand-selected some of the best shows coming in the first few months of 2025 – and here’s why we are so excited about them!
You might think ‘dance, that’s not for me!’ Or ‘Circus? no I only like musicals’ but the new year is a great chance to challenge your own perceptions. Its not for you? Why? You could be cutting your self off from a world of new and exciting experiences that you’ll love!
So, without further ado see our top picks for something different this new year;
Rooh: Within Her - PAST EVENT
Exploring inspirational female figures in Tamil literature, Rooh is a beautiful one-woman dance piece that is enhanced by an evocative soundscape that weaves together voice-over text with music composed by the celebrated Alap Desai and played live.
Tmesis SealSkin
Sealskin is a gorgeous physical theatre piece that explores the ancient selkie myth (Celtic creatures that can shapeshift into Seals, kinda like mermaids). With beautiful projections, movement and live music, be swept away by this meditative and moving uniquely live theatre experience.
Until we sleep
A great intro to Contemporary dance, in the form of hip hop from a partner company Far From the Norm. This show explores conflict hope and responsibility.
10 Nights
A funny poignant drama about finding who you are, which we all tend to do at the start of the year. The story follows Yasser, sleeping and fasting in the mosque for the last ten nights of Ramadan, he soon regrets his decision. But as he navigates smug worshippers, shared bathrooms, and recurring thoughts of chunky chips, he is forced to confront who he is.
Jazz Emu
An absurd musical comedy follows the egotistical alter ego as he prepares for a big performance. Jazz Emu feels like the comedian your cool friend likes before he becomes a household name, why not be the one on the bleeding edge of new cool stuff?
Theatre Ad Infinitum: Last Rites
A beautiful heartfelt movement performance, about rituals and saying goodbye presented in a unique and accessible way you might not have experienced before. As the piece is non-verbal its completely equal experience for deaf and hard of hearing audiences as well as hearing audiences. The show is also accompanied by a soundtrack with heavy bass so you can feel the music of the performance.
Wes Peden: Rollercoaster
Ready to dive into the world of contemporary circus? Not sure what contemporary circus even is? Well Wes Peden’s Rollercoaster presents some of the most extreme juggling ever done on stage! If you want to experience so upbeat draw dropping entertainment this is a great way to dip a toe in a new genre.
Have we tempted you to step outside that narrow comfort zone? Feeling like trying something reflective and introspective - or something high energy and whacky? Lowry literally caters to every vibe this coming year so take this chance to explore something different.
