REWRITES: CHOSEN by Taiyo Yoshida & Dominic Varney

Imagine accidentally killing Harry Potter, Luke Skywalker, or Jesus and having to take their place. Chosen is a pop-rock comedy musical about Sue, an IT Support Technician in her 60s, who wakes from a coma to discover half the world has been zombified. After accidentally killing the prophesied ‘Chosen One’, Sue must assume their identity and save humanity herself.

Each performance includes a special 15 minute preview of a brand new musical

Tue 19 Nov – DEAD FAMOUS by Stephen Hyde and Ella Langley

When struggling songwriter Evie is the sole witness to her pop idol’s crime scene, her secrecy buys her a catapult into the spotlight of superstardom. But is she willing to walk an increasingly corrupt path to keep it shining on her?

Book / Music - Stephen Hyde
Book / Lyrics - Ella Langley
Evie - Alice Hayes
Ensemble parts - Emilia James

Wed 20 Nov – DUET by Jack Pepper

Magic Radio's Jack Pepper takes us inside his new classical-music themed show, Duet; telling the true story of his piano teacher and pianist wife, it is Jack's literal thank you note to his mentor. It tells the story of two pianists who fall in love but do not say, and shows how music brings them together over three decades apart and quite literally saves their lives. The project led Jack to create the Thank Your Music Teacher campaign, as heard at the Royal Albert Hall, on The One Show and on BBC Radios 2, 3 and 4.

About Rewrites

As the grand master of musicals, Stephen Sondheim, once said, ‘Musical comedies aren’t written, they’re rewritten’.

REWRITES showcases new musicals at the start of their journey to the stage – a platform that puts shows on their feet and in front of an audience for the first time. A mix of works-in-progress, concert performances and short preview-style ‘curtain raisers’, you will get to be a part of something special, right at the beginning!

REWRITES is a partnership programme led by The Lowry, Birmingham Hippodrome, MAST Mayflower Studios and Norwich Theatre.

Initiated by The Lowry in 2017, musicals featured previously in REWRITES include: No Miracles Here by The Letter Room, A Super Happy Story (About Feeling Sad) by Jon Brittain and Matthew Floyd Jones (Kathy & Stella) , A Mother’s Song by Finn Anderson and Tania Azevedo and Snowflake by Lewis Cornay. The hit West End musical Operation Mincemeat started out at a scratch event as part of REWRITES.
