About Louiseanne’s work

Alongside developing their current project I AM. AM I for touring, Louiseanne is also creating new work GROOVES. Fusing movement and live performance to share stories of the East Asian diaspora and continuing to shape their distinctive artistic voice and practice.

I AM. AM I

I AM. AM I is an intimate solo; a human story told through movement, dance, circus and bilingual voice. Louiseanne explores their struggle with social norms, displacement of home, and unlearning how they were ‘conditioned’ in Hong Kong. Questioning labelling theory, some given, some self-identifying (e.g. from-from, foreigner) and visually representing this by peeling off layers to show ‘who I am'. Raising awareness of social inequalities through urban anti-establishment disciplines such as Parkour and Krump.

GROOVES

Movement 1 - is an exploration of Hong Kong Chinese heritage through storytelling, movement, dance, fabric and sound. Digging into diaspora, memories of family lineage, self-identity, questioning where each expectation of oneself stems from. An ongoing conversation to understand what we need to move forward.
Music by Camron Prince'.

Movement 2 - Mixing grooves in hip hop music, grooves in dance, and grooves felt in the textures of parkour walls, to illustrate the cycles in life, what makes history repeat itself, and who are the people often left out of stories. In this early stage of creation, this excerpt explores these questions using the 5 elements of hip hop - (break)dance, music (DJing), MCing (rapping), graffiti and knowledge.

“Since I started shifting towards creating my own work in the past 2 years, I’ve realised what I am seeking as an artist is my own way of telling stories, using all parts of my self, to say what I believe represents my people and my ethnic diaspora. It’s who I get to be in a creative space, and how I can understand more about the intersectionality we have in the arts. Lowry Scratch Nights x Circus was a pivoting point in my artistic journey, and I’m very excited to continue crafting this creative process together on Developed With.” – Louiseanne Pui Chi Wong
