REVIEW: Wonder Boy at Lowry
From 15-16 November we're excited to be presenting the critically acclaimed Bristol Old Vic production of Wonder Boy, the heart-warming and inspiring story about the power of communication. To celebrate the shows arrival in Salford we were excited to host a Youth Press Night and we invited Nia F, a member of Lowry Young Company to review the show for the Lowry Blog...
Wonder Boy was an exciting performance that poured light on sensitive topics and gave them the stage to shine; through the use of clever staging, lighting and an astonishingly amazing cast they created a touching yet fun, quirky and engaging performance unlike any other. The character of Miss Wainwright played by the one and only Eva Scott was a character that consistently had the audience in roars of laughter and at times flooded with tears grasping mine and the audiences hearts with her colourful personality.
My utmost praise goes to the set design and technical teams as with their work the play flowed beautifully and the lighting created the perfect atmosphere and mood for each and every scene. In addition to this, this play is the most accessible and inclusive one I have ever had the honour to see, from the sign language interpreter, to the projected text at the back of the stage it meant that anyone and everyone was able to become fully immersed and enjoy it, the room felt like pure joy and celebration of everyone. Tackling the stigma society has placed around stammers and other disabilities, making a clear point to the audience that disabilities do not define us or make us less which truly moved me.
Overall, this smart, witty, fun, exciting, intelligent, engaging, creative and truly, truly amazing performance was truly incredible. From each member of the cast (Hilson Agbangbe, Ciaran O'Breen, Naia Elliott-Spence, Jessica Murrain, Eva Scott), production team and creative involved it was a true standing ovation with an incredible story that needs to be shared with many many more. - Nia F, Lowry Young Company
