Why we need security checks

Following the tragic events at Manchester Arena in 2017, an independent review produced the Kerslake Report which made a series of recommendations. Alongside other lobbying campaigns, this ultimately led to new legislation called Martyn’s Law.

Martyn’s Law became legislation in April 2025 and introduces a tiered Protect Duty to ensure venues are prepared, ready to respond, and know what to do in the event of an attack. It also ensures venues have better protection through enhanced security systems, staff training, and clearer processes. Full enforcement is expected by 2027, and Lowry is committed to meeting these requirements well ahead of schedule.

The Evolv security system

The Evolv security system at Lowry is one of the measures we have introduced in response to Martyn’s Law, ensuring we provide a safe and secure venue. The Evolv security system is the technology we use to screen all visitors when entering the building. It uses low-frequency radio waves, similar to systems used in most high street shops and supermarkets. This allows people to enter the building without stopping and with personal items remaining in pockets and bags.

Safety

The system has undergone extensive testing to ensure it is safe and does not put visitors or staff at any risk. An alternative screening procedure is available for anyone who has medical concerns. We understand that some people may have specific reasons or concerns and be uncomfortable with walking through the system. If this is the case, please speak to a member of our security team on arrival. The system uses cameras as part of the screening process to detect any potentially dangerous or threatening items.

Security at Lowry

We take the safety of our visitors and staff very seriously and therefore have security checks throughout our venue. Lowry is a busy visitor attraction, and we have a number of procedures in place to ensure the safety and security of our visitors, staff, and artists.

Lowry operates a number of security measures—some that you can see and others that you can’t. We work very closely with Greater Manchester Police and members of the security services to ensure our security procedures are up to date and follow best practice. If you have further questions, please speak to a member of our security team.
