About Motionhouse
Pushing movement to its limits since 1988
Founded in Leamington Spa in 1988, we are pioneers in our field and one of the busiest touring companies in the UK, creating awe-inspiring dance-circus productions across the UK and internationally, performing each year to approximately 110,000 people in theatres and at outdoor events.
Our distinctive, highly physical style integrates elements of circus and acrobatics with breath-taking dance to surprise and delight our audiences, using powerful narrative and incredible digital imagery. We have an outstanding reputation for artistic innovation, and we export our work around the world, having taken performances to Australia, China, Japan, Morocco, South Korea and the USA as well as extensive touring throughout Europe.
Pioneers of outdoor dance, we take world-class dance to people of all ages in the heart of their communities. Outdoor work plays an important role in our strategy to reach diverse audiences in diverse places, reaching people who may find it challenging to enter a theatre and buy a ticket. Our outdoor work is accessible and appealing to broad family and community audiences, including non-dance audiences.
With a track record spanning more than 3 decades of creating work in a range of sites and locations, we have secured a reputation as a ‘go to’ company for creating visionary large-scale outdoor events, recent examples being Wondrous Stories, the opening show of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Culture Festival and The National Lottery’s Big Eurovision Welcome event in Liverpool City Centre in 2023. Our Artistic Director Kevin Finnan was Choreographer and Movement Director of the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Finnan was made an MBE in 2013 for his services to dance – a sector he has been contributing to since he co-founded Motionhouse with Executive Director Louise Richards in 1988.
An extensive participatory and education programme runs alongside our performance work and we are proud to inspire the next generation.
We are supported using public funding by Arts Council England, with additional support from Warwick District Council. We are a Birmingham Hippodrome Associate Company.
Don’t forget to book your ticket to see Motionhouse in action when they bring their incredible dance-circus show Hidden to the Lowry on Friday 30 January 2026.
