Creative Youth Support Worker: Colourful Perspectives and Drama Drop-in
Lowry’s Socially Engaged Arts programme are looking for two freelancer Support Youth Workers, one for each of our nurture groups: Colourful Perspectives and Drama Drop-in from September 2025 – July 2026.
Socially Engaged Arts at Lowry ensures young people in Salford who may experience multiple barriers to accessing high quality creative sessions can connect, create and amplify their voices. We work with 3 priority groups; Young Carers, Care-experienced young people, and young people at risk of homelessness who live or learn in Salford, as well as supporting those who are neurodivergent or are experiencing mental health challenges.
The Socially Engaged Arts programme applies a co-creation, person-centred, trauma-informed approach to reduce and remove barriers for young people, allowing them to build confidence in a fun, creative and supportive space. This includes transport support, regular check ins, Access Riders, refreshments and in-session support, whilst retaining appropriate boundaries to keep the space safe and fun for all. Barriers and access needs may be due to neuro-divergence, unstable home lives, complex personal relationships, or mental health challenges.
Colourful Perspectives: visual art weekly sessions.
Drama Drop-In: theatre-based weekly sessions.
When: Both sessions are weekly during term time, Tuesday evenings, 5:30pm – 7pm
Where: Lowry
Ages: 11 – 17 years old
Capacity: Maximum 20 participants
Other Staff: Lead Facilitator, Peer Leader (volunteer with lived experience), Lowry Core Staff (available onsite for urgent safeguarding concerns).
Role
The Creative Support Youth Worker will support weekly creative sessions ran by a lead facilitator by:
Contribute to the overall care of the young people by building sustainable relationships, supporting with personal, social and educational development, and assisting the management of behaviour.
Support participants in accessing the content of the session according to their needs such as scribing for an individual during a writing activity or sourcing ear defenders if an individual struggles with noise levels.
To support the adoption of a co-creative approach giving the young people the opportunity to shape creative outcomes and ensuring they have ownership and belonging in the work being explored or made.
To support in the general management of the sessions, such as supporting on the delivery and recording of evaluation and Arts Award where appropriate, ensuring participants leave the session using the prior agreed transport, submitting a session report in collaboration with the Lead Facilitator.
To bring a positive energy to the session with the ability to enthuse young people around the activities being delivered.
To ensure participants behave in a respectful and appropriate manner when attending Lowry to cultivate a safe and fun environment for all.
To uphold The Lowry’s essential policies including Safeguarding and GDPR such as notifying the Engagement Manager of concerns or disclosures regarding the participants.
Dates
Term One: September 16th, 23rd, 30th, October 7th, 14th, 21th, November 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th.
Term Two: January 13th, 20th, 27th, February 3rd, 10th, March 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st. Term Three: April 21st, 28th, May 5th, 12th, 19th, June 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th.
Requirements
Essential
- Experience of working with groups of young people aged 11 to 17
- Ability to engage and build positive relationships with young people from a range of backgrounds.
- Ability to communicate effectively with young people, parents/carers, team members and members of the public.
- Good knowledge of safeguarding
Desirable
- Previous experience as a Youth Leader
This role does not require any prior experience working in creative sessions, although an enthusiasm and interest in creativity is important.
Fee: £62.50 per session (£25 per hour for 2.5 hours per session; 5pm – 7:30pm)
