SWEENEY TODD
The Original! A Victorian Melodrama

The story of Sweeney Todd first appeared on the stage in 1847, in a melodrama at the Britannia Theatre in the east end of London. The String of Pearls, as it was originally called, was based on a popular “penny dreadful” serialised story.

Opera della Luna recreates that original melodramatic production, restoring the musical element of sensational story telling with an orchestra of eleven musicians, and music penned by British opera composers of the Victorian age.

The production was seen last year in London and gained four and five star reviews including being voted Best Show by The Times:

“Not Stephen Sondheim’s hyper-clever Broadway show this time, but the original 1847 melodrama by George Dibdin Pitt. It was even more popular in its day than Sondheim’s is in ours. After seeing this riotously funny production by Jeff Clarke’s Opera della Luna company you understand why.”

Come and be shocked, terrified, and amazed; and most important of all: hiss the villain, – the notorious Fiend of Fleet Street!

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT A PRODUCTION OF THE MUSICAL BY STEPHEN SONDHEIM

REVIEWS

This production is both an important moment in recovering theatre history and a truly fun night out. You can’t often get to say both of those things in a review, and on the rare occasions you can it is generally a sign of a five-star event.

Plays to See

Where Sweeney Todd – A Victorian Melodrama succeeds, is playing an outmoded and neglected form of theatre straight, but with enough tweaks to pull a modern audience on board. There are many comic highlights in a play that has as many laughs as it does shocks.

The Reviews Hub

Having a live orchestra is a treat. And there is some operatic singing to go along with the instruments, some of which is very impressive and some of which is very funny. Sweeney Todd has buckets of creep and darkness but there’s also a whole lot of fun and laughter that makes this a super enjoyable evening.
