Modern Life: LS Lowry Collection
LS Lowry is one of the most popular British painters of all time - and we’re lucky to own the world’s biggest public collection of his work.
Lowry is famous for his commitment to painting the daily lives of northern British people, often against the background of the modern industrial city. His seascapes and country landscapes are often the opposite – empty and even desolate.
He liked to sketch in real life and then paint from memory, sometimes using influences from surrealism, impressionism - and more – as he developed his distinctive style...
He spent over 40 years in and around Salford and his pictures still connect with locals and visitors to the city today.
"You don’t need brains to be a painter, just feelings." - LS Lowry
