REWRITES: HALF MAN || HALF BULL

Fri 07 Nov 2025 and Sat 08 Nov 2025

A lad heads off to kill a monster.

A boy falls out of the sky.

Two inextricably linked stories of hope and loss, wildly retold by internationally acclaimed ‘masters of storytelling’(FourthWall). Wright&Grainger and Oliver Tilney reimagine two myths - the adrenaline fuelled THESEUS & THE MINOTAUR and the heartrending DAEDALUS & ICARUS.

Two stories, two gigs - two tales of escaping things and proving things. This epic theatrical double-album full of virtuosic spoken word and soaring live music is a story in two halves.

Presented by Wright&Grainger, Oliver Tilney, James Simon, Kevin O’Driscoll and Oliver Award-Winning Molly Morris.

Reviews

★★★★ "Wild gig theatre that’s both invigorating and heartbreaking" - Lynn Gardner, The Stage
★★★★ "Raucous, rudimental-style bangers...soulful electronic arias akin to Bon Iver’s More experimental work" - The Scotsman

Each performance includes a special 15 minute preview of a brand new musical:

Friday 7 Nov - Terminal Sound by Jack D’Arcy

An Engineer walks into the home recording studio of a late, legendary musician.

All that remains are mountains of indecipherable notes, well-worn cassette tapes and a dusty four-track recorder.

Although it seems there might be a ghost in the machine.

Tasked with finishing this life’s work; a ‘swan song’ doused in morbidity, religiosity and sardonicism,

the Engineer mixes…

and re-records…

he tweaks…

then rewrites.

It does begin to beg the question

Whose final album is it, really?

Saturday 8 Nov: Flat Earth: The Musical by Billy Carswell, Calum Pearce and Christopher Pope

Flat Earth: The Musical is a fast-paced comedy about the South Boddington Flat Earth society, an idiosyncratic group of misfits on the brink of extinction. To save their beloved society they must prove once and for all that the Earth is flat. This musical weaves break-neck comedy with pop-rock songs. Action on stage is high-functioning, multi-roling and increasingly surreal, as our ensemble has to face up to their beliefs. What if the Earth really is flat? How far should they tow the line? And once they’re in on the secret can they ever get out?

Book by Billy Carswell

Music and Lyrics by Calum Pearce

Parallax IV - Calum Pearce

Morgan Diggory - Sarah Craig

Rev. Iris Gilbert - Alexandra Morton

Terry Armstrong - Jimmy Ward-Mallinson

About REWRITES

As the grand master of musicals, Stephen Sondheim, once said, ‘Musical comedies aren’t written, they’re rewritten’.

REWRITES showcases new musicals at the start of their journey to the stage – a platform that puts shows on their feet and in front of an audience for the first time. A mix of new touring shows, works-in-progress, concert performances and short preview-style ‘curtain raisers’, you will get to be a part of something special, right at the beginning!

REWRITES is a partnership programme led by Lowry, Birmingham Hippodrome, MAST Mayflower Studios and Norwich Theatre.

Initiated by Lowry in 2017, musicals featured previously in REWRITES include: No Miracles Here by The Letter Room, A Super Happy Story (About Feeling Sad) by Jon Brittain and Matthew Floyd Jones (Kathy & Stella) , A Mother’s Song by Finn Anderson and Tania Azevedo and Snowflake by Lewis Cornay. The award-winning West End and Broadway musical Operation Mincemeat started out at a scratch event as part of REWRITES.
