Simon Armitage

Announced as the National Poet Laureate in May 2019 Simon Armitage will join Words Weekend to give audiences a rare and exciting opportunity to hear readings from his ever growing collection of work. A chance to be in the presence of writing greatness this is the not to be missed event of the festival.

Professor of Poetry at the University of Leeds he was elected to serve as Professor of Poetry at the University of Oxford for 2015-2019. Armitage has received numerous awards for his poetry including The Sunday Times Author of the Year, a Forward Prize and an Ivor Novello Award for his lyrics in the Channel 4 film Feltham Sings. As well as writing for TV, radio, film and stage Simon is the first Poet Laureate who is also an accomplished DJ.
