- Photo Gallery
Behind the Mask, the biggest collection of BAFTA-winning actor portraiture ever assembled, came to The Lowry for its first time out of London in 2014/15.
The exhibition featured portraits of over one hundred international stars. Behind The Mask was a photographic census of actors and actresses who have won or been nominated for a BAFTA since 1954.
The exhibition was a collaboration between renowned celebrity photographer Andy Gotts and BAFTA Future Archive. The project took over two years to produce and sent Gotts across the globe to photograph subjects including Lauren Bacall, Jeff Bridges, Al Pacino, Robin Williams, Johnny Depp and Sidney Poitier
Andy Gotts MBE said: “Even though I have been given the title ‘celebrity photographer’ I have always seen myself as a photographer of actors. I have always been a movie buff and getting the opportunity to meet my matinée idols is beyond a dream come true. I specialise in character studies of the face and try to show a new and different side of world famous faces in my ‘warts and all’ style.”
The BAFTA Archive develops, cares for and seeks to make accessible a collection that focuses on the history of the Academy.
It includes many unique and important items which help to provide a better understanding of the crafts within Film, Television and Games.
