The Lowry is delighted to invite Aerowaves artist Pietro Marullo to create the UK premiere of WRECK – List of extinct species to be presented at the next edition of WEEK 53, The Lowry’s biennial cross-art festival.
WRECK – List of extinct species is an interdisciplinary performance mixing movement, sound and visual art.
Since its premiere in 2017 WRECK has been a huge success internationally and been presented across Europe as well as the US, Mexico, India, China, United Arab Emirates and South Korea. WRECK is created in each location with the participation of local dancers.
A huge, soft, black, pillow-like sculpture, inflated with air, moves in the space. As a hunter, this abstract object has a very expressive power. It seems to ‘swallow and spit’ human beings. It could be considered an allegory for Leviathans or other legendary monsters, or a metaphor of capitalism, environmental extinction, or the human condition. Interpretation is open, but the sense of imminent threat is constantly palpable.
You can find more information about WRECK and videos of previous performances here: pietromarullo.com/wreck-en/
This is an open call for professional dancers. We are looking for six dancers with a high technical level, improvisation skills and ability to work well in a group. We welcome applications from dancers specialising in a range of styles: be it contemporary, hip-hop, ballet or Kathak. What is crucial is an openness to improvise and work collectively in a group.
Please note that dancers perform nude throughout the performance.
Selected dancers will attend a week of workshops and rehearsals to improvise, create and perform WRECK alongside dancers from Pietro’s company. It is critical that you are available for all rehearsal and workshop sessions. Dancers will need to be available from Sat 25 April to Thu 30 April (day and evening calls) inclusive.
The fee is £600 with meals in the Lowry staff canteen also provided for the duration of the rehearsal and performance period. Where appropriate, expenses for travel from outside Greater Manchester can be covered.
How to apply
Interested dancers should send applications to email@example.com. Please include:
– a CV (Curriculum Vitae) describing your most recent and relevant experience.
– video links to a performance or studio recording. DropBox, Google Drive and unlisted/listed YouTube links are perfectly acceptable. Please note: whilst the performance will contain nudity, we will not be expecting nude audition pieces.
– a short personal video (maximum 3 minutes) to introduce yourself and articulate why you are interested in the project.
Deadline to Apply: 31 January 2020
About Pietro Marullo
Pietro is an Italian artist based in Brussels where he founded the INSIEMI IRREALI Company, supported by the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles.
